Tour Guide Offers “Bert’s Eye View” of Noble’s Pond
Resident Shares His Affection for Popular Community
Have you ever taken a tour where the guide was so good you were sorry when the tour ended? Meet Bert Riley, a resident of Noble’s Pond, Delaware’s premier 55-plus community in historic Dover. Bert, who moved to Noble’s Pond with his wife Alice in 2014, was among resident ambassadors who get together with those considering a move to Noble’s Pond. “One day, Colleen, our Lifestyle Director, asked if I’d like to conduct tours of the community and the area. It just kind of grew from there,” he says.
Bert has become a student of the area’s rich history and has enjoyed learning about his adopted hometown. “I show visitors around Noble’s Pond, then we drive into town where I point out many of the historic sites, museums and talk about Dover Air Force Base and Spence’s Bazaar. Some people are more interested in history, and others want to know about sporting events, outdoor activities or night life,” Bert explains.
The Riley’s have lived in the area since 2000, when they moved from Houston, Texas to pursue a business opportunity. After the couple retired they decided to remain in Dover. They watched with interest as construction of Noble’s Pond began and decided early on that it was the right choice for them. Today Alice and Bert are an integral part of this close-knit community. When he’s not leading tours, Bert enjoys playing guitar and singing oldies and country western music. Alice is a dedicated quilter and is a member of quilting groups at Noble’s Pond and across the state.
Bert especially enjoys answering questions during the tours. “I’m not part of the sales department, and I want people to feel free asking me whatever they’d like.” When asked what’s the best part of living at Noble’s Pond, the answer is easy, “I tell them it’s the people. We’re just like a little family here,” says Bert.
Visitors love the tours. More than one has commented that while they’ve visited other communities, none has had its own resident tour guide!
